Now that you’re here, I might as well introduce myself.

My name is Steve Proulx. I’m a columnist, author, and journalist based in Montreal, a predominantly French-speaking city in Canada—the country Donald Trump likes to refer to as “the 51st state.”

Canadians, by the way, find that joke absolutely hilarious.

Every Sunday, I publish a column about us. Twenty-first-century humans—that’s what interests me: our priorities, our obsessions, our myths, our glorious contradictions. I try to maintain some perspective. It’s not always easy.

It must be said that we’ve become accidental tourists in a very strange era:

• Each of us carries around a glowing rectangle that has replaced boredom with anxiety.

• We’ve normalized climate chaos to the point of having inserted a “wildfire season” right before hockey season.

• We’re in the midst of an epidemic of loneliness, where every new technology seems programmed to divide us even further.

• One dude has a fortune equivalent to Poland’s GDP.

• Democracies are crumbling, the U.S. is led by a buffoon playing king, people are way too obsessed with protein, and nobody can finish reading a book anymore.

In short, I don’t know what future historians will say about us, but with these Sunday letters, I humbly hope to leave behind a useful record.

Alright, but what’s in it for me?

Fair question. Let’s start by clarifying what this newsletter isn’t:

• A list of 50 links you’ll never have time to read.

• Tips and tricks for solving problems you don’t have.

• A disguised sales pitch to sell you consulting services.

Instead, I’d like to invite you to spend part of your Sunday morning in my humble company.

(This is the second time I’ve mentioned humility… it’s starting to get a little suspicious).

To wrap up, I enjoy reading people who, like me, love to look at things for a long time. We don’t need to agree; the intellectual process matters more to me than consensus.
